If you’re familiar with the fashion line Iconiq, then you don’t need an introduction for this trailblazing fashionista. CEO Angelique Michelle is a returning Washingtonian and Howard University alumni. After graduation, she moved to Miami where she pursued fashion and style. After working for others for some time she decided it was time for her to produce value for herself and created Iconiq. Three years after starting her styling company, Angelique had an idea to help expand her company with a mobile solution to connect the style world. Initially she had no idea where to start.  "You can have an idea but getting it down on paper and finding the right developer is the challenging part," says Angelique. That's where Street Entrepreneurs came in. The Iconiq Style application allows you to upload items from your wardrobe and connect to stylists worldwide to help you put together looks. Iconiq will also help you locate items to complement your looks in outlets, boutique shops, and even in...

"I always had a different idea about doing things. I always felt there was something more we could do.” Aaron Brehove was a Fraud Investigator at Ernest &Young when he was involved in an accident that almost ended his life. At the time it seemed like the end he asked himself if the world was better for this existence. Aaron was proud of the work he had done and believed in his company’s message. Yet he knew he could live a life of greater purpose and self-fulfillment. He eventually left his firm and began using the tools he acquired as a body language specialist working in fraud investigations to help individuals on the Autism spectrum express the 7 universal emotions that people normally display. Certain behaviors and expressions tell us what another person is feeling or thinking, but people on the autism spectrum have a different approach that may cause a misunderstanding between those outside of friends and family. Aaron and his team created a mobile-based solution with emotional re...

Fabrice Guerrier believes in the power of stories. He sees his passion as the tool needed to leave a lasting impact on the world. "I've been changed by stories. I think storytelling is at the root of so many issues we face today in the world." For Fabrice, the challenge was to help storytellers like him make their work sustainable, since the work world is not exactly built for writers to thrive. "Many writers don't have time to finish a piece of work" said Fabrice. "They may have writer's block or feel they don't entirely understand the industry, because it's very top-down. You need to have a finished product, an agent, and so many other elements to make it out there."

Fabrice came up with the solution of a collaborative storytelling platform called Syllble Studio, which gathers writers in a space where they can let their creativity flow by bouncing ideas off each other and working together to finish a product by deadline. "Writing is better when more m...

Natasha and Noel are the business sisters behind Unparalleled Eye Designs, an interior design company based in DC that has received glowing reviews on their website. As children in a military family they moved a lot, and the two learned how to quickly turn any new house into a home. As they got older, Noel was often asked by her friends to help redesign their house and decided to turn her hobby into a career with her sister and head of management Natasha. "I always wanted to be my own boss", Natasha said.

The two just celebrated five years of a successful business. "Trust is built quickly" Natasha said when referring to their customer service "We've traveled all over and can just click with anybody, and we're transparent. As a businesswoman, you have to be able to talk about money with your customers." Given the customer reviews online, it would seem their customers are more than satisfied. People have described the women as relatable and innovative....

We cannot begin to understand what it is like for our friends and loved ones when they come home from war. We only know that it can be hard for them to find their place in the world again. Ronald Reeves is just one of many who struggled to find his path again but what makes him stand out is his drive to take back his life and his ability to use his passion for food to do it. After serving in the front lines of Iraq, Ron felt disconnected from his family and friends. He returned home with severe PTSD and struggled to "put the pieces of the puzzle back together". Ron was in a homeless shelter for veterans when he came across an ad for a free cooking course with DC Central Kitchen. He recalled the joy he found cooking with his grandparents as a child and a chef he used to watch on TV "I can't remember his name," said Ron. "But he was from Louisiana and he used to cook with wine, and he'd help himself to a little as he cooked. I liked his swagger." He decided to sign up and see where his p...

One of the rites of passage in becoming an adult is being burdened with the basic necessities you should never leave home without-keys, wallet, I.D. and more. This can be annoying when you’re doing something that you should have your hands free for sports, daily runs, or just fun events like festivals and amusement parks. When Teka Thomas went out for his morning run he realized he didn’t have a bag that could carry what he needed and give him maximum mobility. “My name-brand backpack was just a little too cumbersome,” he said “And like most guys, I didn’t like to wear fanny packs. So I started looking online for something that would hold my essentials and not throw off my center of gravity. But I couldn’t find anything, so I came up with VRYPAC.” VRYPAC is Teka’s solution to carrying around your essentials while leaving your hands free. “I started off targeting runners, but people who do extreme sports like skateboarding also love it and my female friends prefer it to a handbag. So it...

Christopher King: We Are Marcus

We Are Marcus is a character-development platform for middle school and high school boys of color through mentorship and peer-to-peer connections on a nation-wide level. It was founded by CEO Christopher King, a former schoolteacher from Brooklyn who wanted to pass on the gift of mentorship to young men like himself "My mentor and I had a conversation one day about how I would be the last one" said Christopher. "That was both inspiring and upsetting. I knew the conversations we had would never affect others, they would never have the advice I had been blessed with. I realized that didn't have to be the case." Christopher's inspiration led to the virtual mentorship platform that is We Are Marcus. What makes his company stand out is its ambitious reach towards affecting the entire country. "Students of color and mentors of color are banding together in a way that hasn't previously been seen" said Christopher.

High heels are gorgeous, but they're so painful to wear! After spending a fortune on a pair of shoes that look good but bring nothing but pain, Jazmine Davis decided something had to be done for the sake of ankles everywhere. She started production for a line of vegan, eco-friendly shoes that are stylish and most importantly comfortable to wear by combining shock-absorbent gel and memory foam. But Jazmine's dream has an even deeper cause. She wants to donate a portion of her profit to helping young girls who have lost both parents just as she did by providing them financial resources from therapy to everyday living expenses. Jazmine hit a couple of bumps in the beginning, mostly funding but also finding the right people to make contracts with. "I think my problem was that I thought it was taking so long, so anybody who said yes (to a business deal) I just jumped on it without researching their talent." Jazmine said "A lot of money and time was wasted doing that. I didn’t realize my own...
